Even though I didn’t take as much advantage of the extended birthday celebration as I once would have, I feel kind of relieved the party is over so I no longer feel compelled to keep trying for another garden or to keep hatching and training pets.
I did very well with the gardening in spite of not planting one batch immediately following another nor planting the biggest gardens for every wizard. Pets ate LOADS of seeds and my mega snack coffers are well stocked. Wizards are well supplied with blades of many sorts, thanks to the Sword Fern crops that were already sitting at elder harvest when the event began.
Pet training wound up mostly being disappointing as usual, with one exception. I did get a great quint heal pet for Jasmine R. Tried to hatch hers with Heather G.’s triple heal Seraph and at 12 failed hatches I gave up. For one the fail was Life Giver, which I’m not that unhappy to have for a Life wizard so I trained the final step and got the fourth heal and Heather will just have to muddle through with that 🙂 The lovely lady from the Adult Non PvP group on FB who helped Jasmine then helped me with Rylee W., for whom I also wanted to get a quint heal pet. I kind of lost count but we’re at something like seven, maybe eight, hatches and the latest one is a fail there too.
Some of the pundits in the world of pets claim quite authoritatively that it takes seven generations or less to get a replica. I’d never hatched that many times on one so I’ve assumed it was true. Very lowering to find out that KI has set this up so apparently there’s no limit to how many hatches it could take to get the pet you want. Just adds to my general feeling that I don’t want to be bothered when it comes to pets.
I only train pets when they have double pet rewards so I’m done with that for a while. Rylee has a couple of miscellaneous plants that didn’t manage to reach elder before the double gardening was over but otherwise all gardens are empty and I plan to leave them sitting for at least a week.
My general plan once I’ve had time off is plant gardens for two wizards on an account, get all theirs to elder harvest and leave it then two wizards on another account, etc. until as many wizards as I want to participate in double rewards have elder harvests ready to go. That way I don’t have to put in too much time per day on gardening but manage to get plenty of double rewards when an event shows up. I’ve been doing it that way for a while and it makes the gardening very relaxed.
I spent so much time on the pets and gardens that once again I barely participated in the BOXES event and never did any of the Lost Pages stuff at all. As always, I enjoyed the party and it was really nice to have the extension so I was able to accomplish a bit more than usual without putting in tons of extra hours at the game. Now the Halloween festivities are just around the corner!
Kingsisle put out the announcement below. You have till October 1 to get the free crowns, packs and elixirs, but the double rewards stuff ends September 17, as do the Five Boxes and Lost Pages events. You also have until October 1 collect the other free birthday stuff. See here for the list of birthday events and the dates.

Since I’m one of the lucky ones who’s been able to get on the game since pretty early in the DDOS attacks, I’ve been enjoying the extended birthday celebration — in fact, I’d say I’m wearing out a bit on it…
Every day I’m aware of glitches that I assume are being caused by the attacks. I’m still having the pet games freeze up in the midst of play and winding up having to close out the game and log back on. I’m still having freezes and weird happenings while gardening as well, some of which also wind up requiring me to either quit and come back in or log out altogether.
It took me a while to catch on to one glitch. I kept thinking it was odd that the double harvests were garnering so few treasure cards from plants that usually drop quite a few. Finally I realized for most of my gardening wizards Harold Argleston has not been popping up when I hit max on the TCs. That’s always my signal to stop harvesting and go sell a bunch of cards. Without it, I kept harvesting and apparently have lost most of the treasure card drops this time.
Be aware that you may want to keep stopping your harvest to check on your TC totals and see if you need to pop to the Bazaar. With a few wizards hatching like crazy during double pets time, I’ve really needed the gold and it hurt my game plan that I wasn’t able to sell all those cards and turn the gold to pricey amulets I could toss in the Shared Bank to keep the coffers up for the ones I have hatching.
Hatching has been grueling so far. Thanks to a patient member of the Adult Non PvP Player group on Facebook, I got the desired quint heal pet you see above for Jasmine in about six hatches. Then the same member and I started hatching with Rylee W., on the second account. We’re up to seven, I think, and the latest one failed at adult. I’ve had Jasmine hatching with Heather G., on the third account. It took six tries to even get a porpoise and I’m now on eight and that one failed…
In the meantime, I haven’t been able to find an indication from KI as to when they’re going to cut off this extension to the birthday celebration. Don’t forget this is a time when people are gathering so many extra snacks, reagents and treasure cards from their gardens that many otherwise tough to find items are plentiful at the Bazaar (and often cheaper than usual). Take advantage while you can!
September 6, 2017
KI announced yesterday–the original end date–that the birthday celebrations will be extended because of the DDOS attacks (see here for their announcement, keep scrolling down) which have been keeping many players from participating. This includes everything; double pets, double gardens, BOXES, Lost Pages, extra rewards on daily assignments and PvP, double monstrology, etc. So far they’re not saying when this ends.
I know from comments I’ve seen that in some parts of the world they’ve still never been able to get back on since the attacks started last Thursday so I’m hazy as to whether the plan is to keep it going until some point after everyone gets back on??? I’m having intermittent problems with the same glitches I previously noted so I gather there are ongoing issues in many places.
I’m both pleased and daunted as the celebration always leads me to spend more time on the game than usual. I’ve been gardening quite a bit on three accounts (I often give a month of membership to one of the two non-member accounts during these events), hatching with some very kind and patient wizards on the Facebook Wizard101 for Non PvP Players group, and that of course leads to lots of the dreaded pet training (those of you who’ve read this blog for a while know how I feel about that 😬).
I’ve barely found time to take a couple of wizards through any of the BOXES — not very encouraged to keep trying by the zero sonic springs I’ve garnered so far (the only reason I do it at this point). As I’ve mentioned before, I find the Lost Pages event is too time consuming/difficult relative to the rewards you get so I’ve not worked on it at all.
The way the Spellwrits are scattered, it often takes the whole 10 fights to get the total you need and the Spellwrits are always quite a bit higher health than the normal mobs in the area. The dungeon then takes a bit of time and has a boss that’s tougher than the usual bosses in whatever area. And I’m always flabbergasted at the tiny amount of XP I get for the time all that takes as well as the relatively innocuous drops. If there are great drops, I’ve sure had no luck at getting any. I generally do so much better just questing…
Looks like some plants for which I thought I’d just get a few double mature harvests are going to make it to elder while it’s still double–though I’m starting to see signs they’ve slowed down the plant timers. As a just-in-case I’ve planted some Couch Potato and/or Evil Magma Pea gardens today for a few wizards who already raked in two elder harvests (plants already there the day it started and then planting and harvesting another round) in hopes of replenishing both some mega snacks and my hatching-diminished gold supplies. If the event keeps going even a few more days I’ll get the gold back up for sure and possibly make it to another elder harvest. My pets will be eating a lot of seeds 🙂
Anyway, if you’re fortunate enough to be in one of the areas where you can get on the game, keep on enjoying the birthday party!
Three something in the morning, I’m up because my muscles are causing trouble, and taking advantage of the birthday celebration by training a pet. Grumpy Gobblers is the game in which I can collect all four (in this case eight) points pretty much every time so I’m lobbing my pet at the lego-like structures. Suddenly the game freezes and I can’t get anything to go again. I wind up using control-alt-delete to close the program, get on again and same thing happens.
I’d used the free elixir and wound up wasting at least half, first spending 10 points a round on nothing– game didn’t finish and couldn’t feed pet so zero points–and then by having to quit before I’d used it all. I logged off and tried to get back on the game. No dice. Tried a couple of times and finally gave up.
Early the next afternoon I tried to get on again and couldn’t do it. Waited a while and couldn’t get on again. I kept getting an error message I’d had before and started running all kinds of fixes as well as the usual, restart computer, turn off/turn on router, try a second computer, change firewall settings, etc. Finally it occurred to me I should check the Wizard101 Non PvP Facebook group to which I belong and there discovered the game was down for everybody.
I couldn’t get back on till after midnight and then I ran into glitches so often everything took ages. Every wizard with a garden froze upon casting the first spell. When it started up again it would close the gardening menu, take the wizard off her mount (literally no longer equipped) and prevent casting any further gardening spells. Each time I had to “quit” and re-enter. When I tried to plant gardens, it would disconnect from the server every 5 or 6 seeds and then I couldn’t select a seed or do anything else until I quit and came back in again.
Also tried to do some pet training. It kept freezing, either during the game or when I tried to feed my pet. Eventually a “Connection Lost” message would pop up, I’d quit and then come back in. This time the xp would have registered when I came back in, but still, a tiresome way to play.
There was much speculation today as to what caused the game to go down. I’m not going to engage. KI will probably make a statement about what happened. And clearly, whatever went wrong, there are still glitches because of it. Hopefully all will be worked out soon. I’m hoping the birthday celebration will extend through Wednesday since we all basically missed a day.
Every year Kingsisle runs a birthday celebration week, usually starting in the first week of September, and this year’s began today and runs through Tuesday, September 5, 2017.
You can log in on the Wizard101 site and pick up free items. The Professor’s B.O.X.E.S. quests are back as well as the Lost Pages quests. Members get double pet xp, double gardening drops, double animus in Monstrology, and free training point buy back.
I’ve had a bunch of gardens sitting at elder harvest for weeks so it took several hours today to harvest, keep moving things around through the Shared Bank and into attics and Seed Vaults and popping to the Bazaar to sell TCs and miscellaneous snacks.
It’s a great time to buy treasure cards at the Bazaar as most gardeners have too many at this time. Same thing for snacks. Such big harvests, so many snacks… The treasure card exception is gardening treasure cards, as everyone gets busy gardening during these double rewards events and that means they’re buying up gardening TCs.
Lots to do. Good time to maximize benefits from gardening, pets and monstrology. It’s always fun so enjoy!
Wow, quite a week KI is presenting for us. After a day of Double Pet XP, we now have Double Garden Rewards from today (6/7/17) through Sunday!
If you plant Evil Magma Peas, Couch Potatoes, Boom Shrooms, Snapdragons or Tiger Lilies today and provide them with all the likes, you can collect double XP, gold, treasure cards, seeds, pet snacks, etc. before the event is over. [I’m sure there are other short-term items, but these are the ones I happen to grow..]
I’ve had gardens sitting at elder harvest for four of my wizards so I’ve already collected a round of double harvests– including feeding a bunch of Evil Magma Pea seeds to pets on an account on which attics and Seed Vaults are already bursting with them! And I’m planting some EMPs and Couch Potatoes to get a second round of pet snacks. And on one of my accounts I’ve harvested an abundance of blade TCs from Sword Ferns.
Make sure to take advantage of this great opportunity!
March 13, 2017
I’ve seen signs during the last several Double Garden Reward events that KI is slowing down the timers and this time feels more like it than ever.
I planted Couch Potatoes and Evil Magma Peas on Wednesday, early in the evening. Normally both of those — with all likes — would have been at elder harvest Saturday. Not only did they not make it but for most of them the progress bar didn’t move from Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon. I even made time to check in this morning before the event got taken down and none of the Couch Potatoes made it to elder harvest.
A bunch of the CPs are close but didn’t make it and another batch is only about 3/4 complete. Some of the EMPs finally made it by late Sunday night and the rest by this morning but that’s 1 to 1-1/2 days longer than usual. And the CPs are at 2 days longer than usual and counting.
I’ve seen some comments on a Facebook group I’m in about the timers seeming to have slowed down at the last event and have run into people in the game who seem to be experiencing this slow-down too. What’s your experience? Do you think KI is slowing down the growth of plants during these events?
I’m finding the safest way to be assured of double elder harvests on crops you want is to get them there when there’s not a double rewards event happening and just leave them sitting at elder until one starts. That way you’re assured of one double elder harvest. After that it’s getting to be a crap shoot whether you can get any sort of plant–no matter how short the growing cycle–from seed to elder harvest while one of these events is happening.
March 10, 2017
I’ve been a bit lax on the posting front on all my blogs lately so I didn’t manage to post a heads up on Wednesday when Double Garden XP days started. Through Sunday you get double XP, gold and harvest drops for all gardening. Took me by surprise as I’d not expected one for a while, but it happened I had a bunch of gardens sitting at elder harvest 🙂
There’s possibly enough time to plant Couch Potatoes, Snap Dragons or Tiger Lilies and get them to elder harvest if you have every like as those grow pretty fast but it’s too late for most plants–although you could get a mature harvest or three off some, like Evil Magma Peas.
I’m mostly pointing this one out to note it tends to be a good moment to pick up some of the rarer or hard-to-get treasure cards and reagents at the Bazaar as all the gardening folks are getting huge harvests and needing to sell stuff. I’ve already hit the limit on treasure cards and headed to the Bazaar to sell them with several wizards numerous times.
For instance, Evil Magma Peas drop lots of Feints and Tower Shields. I have so many for most of my wizards that I sell quite a few at this point. EMPs also drop Black Lotus, Scrap Iron, and Sandstone (among others) and most of my wizards have huge stores of them plus I have the maximum in the Shared Bank so I’ve been selling lots of reagents too.
If you’re looking for crafting ingredients or to shore up your TC collection, spend time sitting at the Bazaar this weekend!
I’ve been winding down some on gardening since I have pretty big stores of pet snacks and reagents and treasure cards so my main effort has become having gardens at elder harvest whenever Double Garden Reward events arise. So, I’ve had 12 wizards with gardens at elder harvest since the last Double Garden days in September.
In fact, due to buying and passing pricey treasure cards to lower level wizards on one of my other accounts, I finally had to harvest and replant so I could re-build gold supplies. Seems like a long time without a Double Pet or Garden reward event…
